Just like Orava and Turiec, Liptov used to be an independent county in the past.

There are three towns in the region (Liptovský Hrádok, Liptovský Mikuláš, Ružomberok) and 79 municipalities.

Liptov is situated in the north of Slovakia and its north – eastern part borders on Poland. Its northern border is made up of the crests of Veľká Fatra, Chošské vrchy hills, and the crest of Western Tatras. Its southern border is made up of the crest of Nízke Tatry, its western border is formed by the Veľká Fatra mountains. The most precious natural values are protected in the National Park of High Tatras, the National Park of Nízke Tatry, and the National Park of Veľká Fatra. The National Park of High Tatras, founded as early as 1949, is the oldest national park in Slovakia.

The history of Liptov is mostly reflected in the architecture of Liptovský Mikuláš and Ružomberok with a Neo-Renaissance townhall from 1897. The Gallery of Ľudovít Fulla, Liptov Museum, nearby Liptov castle, Vlkolínec settlement, the memorial of the massacre at Ružomberok-Černová make up only part of cultural and historical heritage of Ružomberok.

In the building which nowadays houses the Museum of Janko Kráľ in Liptovský Mikuláš the most famous Slovak rob Juraj Jánošík was tried and sentenced. The oldest structure in the city is the Gothic Pongracz Curia, at present the centre of a painter Koloman Sokol. Other important examples of Liptov’s history include the Liptovský Hrádok castle and the Museum of Slovak village in Pribilina.

Among places to go with international recognition are thermal spas Thermal Park Bešeňová and Tatralandia Aquapark at Liptovský Mikuláš. They are both situated close to the Liptovská Mara dam, which is with its 21 square kilometres a good basis for summer recreation. The offer of recreation and sports facilities is supported by the ski resorts Skipark Ružomberok, Jasná and many others. The visit to Demmänovské jaskyne caves is an unforgettable experience.
