Describe of district

The district is situated in the eastern part of Žilina region and connects the region with the east of Slovakia. Important east – west transport links lead through the region, especially the D1 (E50) motorway and an international railway No. 180.

Branches represented in the district include manufacture of electrical and optical equipment, food and beverages production, leather and leather products production, machines and equipment manufacture, wood processing and wooden products manufacture. Industry is concentrated in the towns of Liptovský Mikuláš and Liptovský Hrádok.

Construction of Liptov industrial park is under preparations. Tourism is an important sector as well, as the district can boast of the highest number of accommodation facilities in Žilina region (25,7%).

Employment grew annually by 0,2%. Quality network of education facilities and various recreation options (wellness and spa, winter tourism) are advantages of the district.
