Describe of district

The district is situated in the centre of the region and its northern part belongs to the central conurbation Žilina – Martin, one of the four most important agglomerations in Slovakia. An international railway No. 180 and the road No. I/18 (E50) cross the district in east – west direction. Connection to Banská Bystrica region is ensured by the road No. I/65 and a railway. Construction of the D1 motorway and the R3 expressway has started.

Engineering has the biggest tradition. Automotive industry, pharmaceutics, furniture manufacture, and printing industry are represented as well.

The Martin – Sučany industrial park is a greenfield with an area of 436 ha. It has already provided suitable lands to several foreign investors to establish their plants and it still has free space. The city of Vrútky disposes of free areas for industry too. The district ranks second regarding the incomes for own performances and goods (9.2%) in Žilina region.
