Describe of district
The district is located in the north of Žilina region and borders on Poland. Location of its centre, the town of Námestovo, at the banks Oravská priehrada dam indicates the district’s importance for the possibilities of the development of tourism.
As to industrial performance, dominating sectors are manufacture of communication equipment, manufacture of machines and equipment and wood manufacturing. Agriculture, especially swine breeding, is significant as well.
The industrial park at Oravská Jasenica is a greenfield with a size of 10 ha and it is an important condition for the development of employment in the district. Unemployment has grown year-on-year by 11.1%. The district has the highest natural increase of population in Žilina region.
Possibilities for the development of ecotourism and agrotourism, especially in the Protected Land-scape Area Horná Orava covering 85% of the district.
