Orava used to be an independent county in the past. Its former centre, Orava castle, the seat of Orava Museum at present, belongs to the most visited places in Slovakia. Ethnographical, historical, archaeological and science exhibition are found in the castle buildings. The present look of the castle is connected with the Thurzo family. Besides the castle and historic buildings at the square of Dolný Kubín, the history of Orava is also reflected at many examples of folk architecture. Compound of original log houses in Podbiel and an open air museum in Zuberec both well represent it. Nice examples of sacral architecture are wooden churches at Tvrdošín, Leštiny and Istebné. A partly restored narrow gauge railway in Oravská Lesná is another popular spot. The most beautiful nature can be seen at Western Tatras (Orava section also known as Roháče) belonging to the National Park of High Tatras. Chočské vrchy and the National park of Malá Fatra at the south - western border of the region are also very favourite destinations. Oravská Lesná, Ski Park Kubínska hoľa and Zverovka – Spálená belong to the most favourite ski resorts. The best place for water recreation is at Oravská priehrada dam, which was built in 1941 – 1954. The Slanica hill remained above the water surface and became an art island with an 18th century church. A regular boat trip is provided to the island. Ideal conditions for lovers of thermal water are provided at Meander Park Oravice. |
